Nestled in the heart of Comanche, Texas, Cook's Fish Barn is a beloved local treasure for seafood enthusiasts and comfort food lovers alike. This charming buffet and fast food restaurant specializes in Southern-style seafood, with its signature All You Can Eat Catfish Dinner leading the way as a definite crowd-pleaser. Known for delivering fresh, hot, and generously portioned fish, Cook's Fish Barn offers diners an inviting atmosphere that feels like a welcoming country gathering.
From the moment you step through the doors—although finding the entrance might be an adventure in itself as some visitors have noted—the experience quickly turns into a cozy, no-frills meal centered around hearty, classic flavors. The buffet features not only their prized catfish, perfectly battered and crisped to golden perfection, but also chicken strips, country-fried steak, and steak fingers, all reminiscent of home-cooked Southern fare. Complementing your meal is a salad bar and plentiful sides including the beloved hush puppies, which add a sweet, savory crunch that balances the meal beautifully.
The owners of Cook's Fish Barn bring a genuine warmth to the space, personally greeting guests and ensuring a hospitable environment that embodies small-town charm. One regular enthusiast raves about the friendliness of the owners and the soft serve ice cream dessert that provides a delightfully sweet finish to the meal. Be mindful that it's a cash-only establishment, which can catch some newcomers by surprise, but this old-school approach adds to the authentic country vibe.
While the menu might seem a bit complex initially and the rustic setting isn’t flashy, this is exactly what gives Cook’s Fish Barn its character—a straightforward, honest dining experience where the food speaks for itself. The pricing, particularly for the all-you-can-eat catfish at just under $20, is a value that longtime patrons say is absolutely worth it for the quantity and quality served.
There is a nostalgic comfort in the way the fish and other fried items arrive at your table: hot, crispy, and packed with Southern soul. Some may find the proteins cooked a bit on the firmer side, which hints at the busy kitchen maintaining speed without sacrificing the golden crust that defines their dishes. It’s not fine dining, but it’s exactly the kind of hearty meal that quenches the appetite after a long day, inviting you back again and again.
For anyone traveling through Comanche or locals seeking down-home flavors in a friendly, unpretentious setting, Cook’s Fish Barn offers a genuine taste of Texas hospitality paired with some of the freshest catfish around. Just remember to bring cash, come hungry, and be ready to savor a beloved culinary tradition.
Always fresh and hot fish. Owners are super friendly every time we go and always speak. And dont forget their soft serve ice cream. Yummy.
I have mixed feelings about giving this review. A back country, all you can eat catfish, chicken strips, steak fingers, salad, friends and hush puppies along with a handful of there items you can order from their menu. One business out in the middle of the country. We went at night, so I'm not exactly how it looked from the outside. Wasn't obvious which door to enter, but we made it into the building. Got in and notice how short the ceiling was. I'm about 6'5" and I had to duck. There is a slope to the ceiling, so as you shift, you can get to a ceiling that is tall enough to not duck. Went to pay for the all you can eat and handed hery card, to which she said cash only. Wasn't certain if ai had cash but she immediately reached for a card with their address and said we could just mail payment to them. I've never heard of that. Wow. I did have cash enough. Now to the food. The catfish was pretty tasty. I'd give it about an 7+ out of 10. I'm huge on fish, so it was pretty good. Flavored right, kind of smallish pieces, but over all did the job. The chicken tenders were breaded right and we're tender. I am confident to give them a solid 8+. Steak fingers. I missed them on my first pass and almost missed them on my second pass. They weren't really warm and seemed as if they may have sat there for a bit. I can't in good conscience rate them. I had three bites... And set them to the side. I would like to have them fresh out of the cooker next time. Seasoned fries were very good. I got some just as they came out. I'd give them a 9. The hush puppies, maybe a 5-6. They didn't have any type of vibrant taste and they may have been there for a while also. Wife had the self-served salad. Was a simple, what looked like iceberg lettuce, with tomato wedges, white onion, shredded cheddar, and ranch. She enjoyed it and remarked that it was all fresh and the ranch was good. A few more components like maybe egg or croutons, maybe a cucumber could have brought it up to a 9 to 9+. But it gets an 8+ for being as fresh as it was. Coleslaw was very simple, but fresh. Not the KFC style that many are used to, but you could taste all the flavors and I liked it. 8 for that. The cocktail sauce was really good as was the tartar. 8+ for the tarter, 9 for the cocktail. Plastic plate, plastic utensils for the all you can eat. Overall we enjoyed our meal. Atmosphere was just basic, but the food did us well. I read that they had a ribeye. Said they had a real knife for that. May have to try that next time. We will return. Good value for the money. It was $20 per.
Best place in the world to come and get all you can eat catfish this place has been around forever. All you can eat catfish is now going up to $19.82 a plate but it’s well worth it.
It's been here a while and is clearly a local favorite. Warning--they ONLY take cash or checks. I don't think they are spectacularly used to newbs and the menu is kinda complex, so be careful you understand what you are ordering. Steaks are a bargain, salad bar and desserts are great. Country-fried steak, fish, and chicken on buffet are a bit harder cooked than I would like but they seem to know their customers.
Its nice place but you need to put a sign on your door CASH ONLY. some are visitor that hear about the place and dont know about it. We was one of them. Also could print out a menu so while you waiting in line you can know alittle more what to expect. Put more info on your site about cash only, what is buffet, what you pay more if you want it like desserts, what price is steaks, ect. Other then that enjoy it .
If you want a home town, off the beaten path family style place to eat, go to Cook's. If you don't like catfish, there are some other options but why would dare miss the best catfish ever.
I had a good feeling when I drove up to this place hungry after a long drive. Best fried catfish I've had bar none! Don't forget their sauces if you get it to go.
You'll search far and wide to find better catfish and you'll come up empty. It was good to come back to an old favorite after moving away. Can't wait til next time.
